When playing media directly from the cloud, it’s not speed that’s the bottleneck, but latency. Because latency is so important, Drive monitors your network performace continuously. You’ll be notified of what you can expect from your network connection before you even press play.

Bookmarks

Media management, redefined. Show your team members where you stored audio, stock footage, graphics, whatever. Bookmark folders on Drive per production, automatically synced between team members, and pin them if you want to make sure they stay cached locally.

Proxies, Originals, Or Both

Have a proxy workflow? Working with Optimized Media? Editing directly with H.264? ProRes? It all works. The only thing that doesn’t make sense today? Editing raw, directly from the cloud. Other than that, the sky’s the limit.

Drive Thru

Drop Off

Clients can batch upload files directly into Drive, and right into a folder of your choice. Drop Off links are created in PostLab, giving you accelerated uploads, complete with expiry dates, and (yes!) email confirmations.

Pick Up

Finished some edits, rendered out timelines, and now need to share them externally? No need to get them an account. Select a file on Drive, create a Pick Up link, and have your clients download it whenever they want.

Mail Drop

Need to kickstart a project, but there's just too much media to upload? Send us your disks and we'll plug them straight into our servers. Also great for dailies, rushes, and whatever you need on Drive overnight — or even the same day.

Snapshots

Mail Drop, the other way around: send us an empty disk, and we'll return it with your Drive's contents on it. All of it, or just a selection - that's up to you. To a NAS, LTO, or a different cloud? It's all possible, just ask us.

Kyno's Drill Down feature, in the cloud. With Kyno technology running on our servers, Drive can index your media as soon as data is added to it. No more waiting until Kyno finishes parsing your Drive when you connect to it on your Desktop, but do all the heavy lifting on beforehand - index, extract metadata, and create previews, without the waiting.

MASV helps out when you need to get media into the hands of editors as fast as possible, from wherever to wherever. Set up a PostLab Portal in MASV, and have anyone upload media straight to Drive. It's Drop Off, but with worldwide acceleration - so it won't matter whether your media is coming from your town, or another continent.

Turn your Drive into an independent ISG, and every media file that is uploaded to Drive is automatically catalogued, transcoded, and instantly available inside Iconik and even your NLE - whether your editors work with proxies, or originals.

Can I try out Drive to see how it works for me?

Of course! Best way to do so is to start a PostLab Pro or Team trial. Both include 100GB of Drive during the free 15-day trial. Afterwards, you can finetune the amount you need.

Is Drive coming to Windows?

Yes, we're currently working on that in combination with Remote Locking for Windows. No ETA yet, but definitely reach out to us if you need both so we can decide if we can give you pre-release access.

I don't need another terabyte, I already use [your pick].

We hear ya. If you're already using something like iCloud, Dropbox, or Google Drive, it not always makes sense to have *another* TB of cloud storage. Start small with one of our Tiny Plans: pick 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, or 500 GB as your Drive size.

Can I use Drive without PostLab?

You can use Drive without making use of any of the PostLab project management goodness, that's up to you. The PostLab client just functions as the way to connect and manage your Drive, as it contains all the logic and security that Drive requires.

Can my clients upload or download data, without needing an account?

Yes, they can upload files straight into your Drive by using a Drop Off link, or download with a Pick Up link. Manage those links yourself in PostLab, complete with expiration date.

Is my data safe?

Yes, very much so. Drive uses several layers to make sure your data is available only to you: PostLab, Drive, LucidLink, and Wasabi all have independent, top-notch, pen-tested security protocols in place, and it requires all authentication layers to work together simultaneously before a Drive's contents can be accessed. Is Drive a backup service?

Drive is not a backup service - just like Dropbox, Google Drive, Box, and OneDrive aren't. We, of course, do create backups, but those are meant for restoring service in the case of force majeure. If you need a backup of your specific data, check out our Snapshot service, or talk to us about backing up your Drive automatically to a cloud provider of your choosing.

Why is latency more important than download speed?

When downloading a large file, your filesystem does a single request, and then the data flows in. You won't notice the request might take half a second, as you won't be able to play back the file until downloaded. But as Drive allows you to play back a file without downloading it, it needs to do a request for each chunk. The faster those requests can be done, the better.

Can I improve my latency?

If you're on WiFi, switching to Ethernet will help a lot. Even if you already max out your download speed on WiFi, Ethernet will always have remarkably less latency. Beyond that, it's a matter of talking to your ISP.

Don't I need Tier 1 cloud storage for real-time work?

Tier 1 is superfast, but you'll only experience it if your workstation is in the cloud too, like a Windows VM on AWS EC2. Your home or office connection is relatively limited, so downloading from S3 storage easily fills it up. Especially with finetuned object storage like Drive uses, you hit the sweet spot between cost and transfer speed.

Are there any file size limitations?

None. Due to its block-based nature, Drive scales indefinitely. On top of that, we engineered Drop Off to support all file sizes — even a single 100GB file uploads fine. To top it off, both Drive and Drop Off have automatic resume functionality. Detecting interrupted uploads, only the missing bits are uploaded.

Can I download my media instead of streaming it from the cloud?

Of course - remember that Drive acts just like shared storage. If your connection doesn't support direct playback of the media you're using, simply drag the files from Drive to a local disk and you're good to go. FCPX user? PostLab's Individual mode will save yourself and the team from endless relinking.

Proxies or original media?

Many ask us: should we store just proxies in the cloud, or originals too? Well, it depends. If you plan on editing remotely, but doing the final grade in a central location, just storing proxies online makes sense. But if you need to be able to finalize, grade, or conform wherever you are, you'll need OCF in there too.

What happens when my Drive is full?

Drive can never be full. When you upload more data than your plan allows for, we'll notify you. If after 24 hours your Drive still contains more data than your plan allows for, it's adjusted automatically and you are billed for an extra TB. To downgrade, remove some files, and adjust your plan in PostLab itself. The change will be applied at the start of the next billing cycle.

What happens when pricing changes?

In case we introduce new pricing or plans, you may convert to the new pricing, or stick to the plan you have - forever. We'll always offer a way to crossgrade if you prefer that, and we'll never force new pricing upon you.
